Day 16 (9 May)

I know I over-hydrated this morning. Walked 13.3 km like a diabetic dog marking territory.

Only stopped for coffee and to meet Gerald.

“People of faith are so similar, no matter the religion. People of religion are so different.”
– Gerald on Camino by bicycle from England.

“My Dad had a gentle disdain for good people he called ‘Holy Water Pollywogs.’ They immerse themselves in holy-water-like behavior, but never grow spiritual legs.”
– Jim on Camino by foot-in-mouth from USA.

Went through old truths or truisms in the morning, listening for my daily meditation. Turns out, today is simpler than that. Empty mind, walking body, aware, peaceful.

Heard birds mostly. Walked alone. Passed a Pilgrim or two; passed by a Pilgrim or two. Stopped to eat only when a stone entered my shoe. Glad to have packed a banana, apple, cheese, and salami.

Finished the day at 36.2 km, 2.5 liters water – ran dry during the last km.

Two of three Albergues full in town. Happy to be showered with chores done by 4 pm. Lower bunk a bonus – for all near me.

Funny this: when I got close to the city, and had two groups (fivesome and twosome) behind me chatting, their voices attacked my mind like sounds in a fever dream. Took a few kilometers to get my civilization ears back.

Beer and maybe not a Pilgrim dinner tonight. Paella?
